How to get to MV

If you’re staying more than a couple of days, we recommend bringing a car. The island is larger than you might think, and having a car makes it much easier to explore. While there are buses, taxis, and Ubers, they can be limited—especially in quieter areas.

To bring a car, drive to Woods Hole, MA and take the Steamship Authority Ferry—the only ferry that allows vehicles. Car spots book up quickly and typically sell out by April. Reservations open around January 19, so we recommend booking early.

If you're not bringing a car, you can park in the overnight lot (about $15/day), take the free shuttle to the terminal, and walk onto the ferry. Walk-on reservations aren’t required, but it's helpful to book ahead.

Flying is the easiest option if you're coming from New York (JFK or LGA), Boston (BOS), or Washington, D.C. (DCA). Flights are quick (about 45 minutes from NYC), and you’ll land at the island’s small, easy-to-navigate airport (MVY)—often stepping right off the tarmac and out the gate.

If you're traveling from outside the Northeast, you can connect to MVY or fly into Boston (BOS) and drive or take a car service to Woods Hole ferry terminal. From there, you can take the ferry.

As with all things Vineyard, we recommend booking early—flights fill quickly and prices rise as the date approaches.

Another option is to take Amtrak to Providence, RI. From the Providence station, it’s a quick 25–30 minute car ride (via Uber, Lyft, or car service) to New Bedford Ferry Terminal: 49 State Pier, New Bedford, MA 02740

We recommend booking both your Amtrak and ferry tickets in advance, especially during peak season. You can find ferry schedules, fares, and book tickets here.

Be Mindful:

  • Double-check train and ferry times to ensure a smooth connection.

  • Allow extra time for your transfer from Providence to New Bedford.

  • Booking round-trip ferry tickets early is highly recommended.
